The NEW GI BILL

Shippies,

Just wanted to send a quick note to all 20 people who frequent the announcements section of our amazing website - thank you Adam and Ryan - concerning the recently signed, as of June, brand spanking new GI Bill, since it effects us all. Some of you may already know about it, but most of the '00 guys I've spoken with the past few weeks, have no idea. Trust me, everybody needs to know about this.

So here's the deal. I know everybody is thinking, the GI Bill doesn't affect us, we signed our rights away during the massive onslaught of paperwork during Plebe Summer. However, the new GI Bill allows service academy and scholarship ROTC recipients to apply for all the benefits. And there are benefits aplenty. Unless there is something that stipulates that only RECENT academy grads are allowed to use the new GI Bill (to date I haven't found anything - if it's out there please let me know, and disregard everything that follows) this applies to every one of us. What follows below will take effect Aug 2009. As well you must have at least 36 months of consecutive active duty days, post 9/11 - which most of us do - to get 100% of the benefits. Lastly, there is NO BUY IN! You automatically get it.

The Benefits:

Tuition: Members applying to, or already attending, an institution of higher learning (Universities, flight school, and some trade schools) will receive tuition up to the highest in state tuition for the public university in their state. There is a list for his on line at the New GI Bill website.

Example: UC Berkley is around $7.9K, so any school in CA you attend you can get up to that amount, no questions asked. Anything over (for private school universities like USC) might be covered under the Yellow Ribbon agreement, where if the University gives VA scholarships, then the VA will agree to pay half of the remainder, so long as the school will pay the remaining half. So, it's possible to get your entire tuition paid for.

Stipend: Members will also receive a yearly, $1K books and fees stipend.

Living Allowance: Now here's the good part. Members will also receive a living stipend during their time in school in the amount of BAH for an E-5 for you zip code. If you are active duty and you would like to take advantage of the GI Bill, you won't get the E-5 pay, but you will get everything else.

Example: I'm currently living in Los Angeles, with two dependents. I'll be getting close to $2K a month (E-5 BAH for LA), the entire time I'm in school.

All in all: Tuition + Stipend + E-5 BAH = lots of money.

For some of you who already have jobs, already went back to school and shelled out a lot of money for your education - this might suck. Unfortunately you cannot grandfather your tuition expenses.

HOWEVER, you can use this for another degree, OR, you can transfer your benefits to your dependents (wife, sons and/or daughters). This used to be something only the Army could do, but no longer, everybody can do it.

I hope everyone benefits from this is some way. Most people I know are getting out or are pondering getting out but don't know how to go back to school and make some money in the meantime. This at least provides some support for everyone. If you have investments keeping you stable, you could even use this to make some money... and get a degree.

Hope everybody is doing well. Can't wait for Navy Football to get started this year. I'm at USC (SoCal) right now getting my masters, and am looking for some good Annapolis tailgating out here for football season. Gerald Gallagher III and I will be making asses of ourselves for the USC vs. Ohio game this year. If you're in the area, please join, or email me at zguerra@usc.edu.

Please share with friends and family members in the service. Everybody should benefit from this.

Good luck,

Zach G.

Hey 2000

My response to the Murph in Iraq question: he's on his 4th trip to Iraq.

How is everyone?  I notice there hasn't been much traffic on our class page.
Todd ('99), my husband, and I just moved from Albany, GA to Jacksonville, NC.  He checked into 1/8 as weapons co cdr and I am working logistics for II MEF.  Our girls are now 4 and 3.  Morgan is getting ready to start pre-K and I'm terrified that she's growing up too fast.  Kaitlyn (3) is chirping right along and enjoying bossing our dogs around and watching Dora The Explorer.  I have seen so many classmates up here and am looking forward to seeing more.  I have recently lunched with Chip Kelleher and Jason Martin.  I have chatted with Mike Anthony a few times up in the MEF HQ, he's working at the MEF as well.  Todd and I just bought Kate (Majewski) Murray's F-150.  Kate and Matt are doing well and Kate's usmc tri team won 1st at a big race out in California.

Take care and I am hoping that we will get up to A-town this fall for a few games.  I haven't been back to USNA since TBS.....it's time to check it out now that we are back on the east coast.

Take care,
Maura (Duggan) Sanders

A Message from George Watt

Over The Wall - A Message From George Watt

A New Year's Resolution
This is the time of year where you look back on your
accomplishments and goals to see how you've stacked
up, you reflect on what was done well and what could
have been done differently, and you resolve to do even
better in the new year.

As a non-profit organization,we go through a similar
drill with somewhat different metrics—we look at
budgets, hits on the web site and clicks on emails,
attendance at events and meetings, issues of Shipmate and
other publications, and dollars raised in support of the
Naval Academy and the Brigade of Midshipmen. The
list of benchmarks and metrics can be endless, but our
mission and our purpose is finite and clear:

To serve and support the United States, the naval service,
the Naval Academy and its Alumni by furthering the highest
standards at the Naval Academy; by seeking out, informing,
encouraging and assisting outstanding, qualified young men and
women to pursue careers as officers in the Navy and Marine
Corps through the Naval Academy; and by initiating and
sponsoring activities which will perpetuate the history, traditions,
memories and growth of the Naval Academy and bind
Alumni together in support of the highest ideals of command,
citizenship and government.
There are those who question our methods, our
model and our mission. There are those who would
measure us by another standard. While I sincerely hope
and expect that those folks will eventually choose to
join us in our mission and our vision, this message is for
those of you who are already engaged as supporters and
members of the Extended Brigade.

In October 2007 I made a commitment to the
Council of Class Presidents. And I made a similar
commitment to the Alumni Association Board of
Trustees at the December meeting. Given the broad
distribution for Shipmate, delivered to more than 47,000
households,I wanted to make the commitment here as well.
I know that you expect us to be true to our charter
established in 1886.You expect us to be good business
people, not “big business” people, but people who
understand how to competently manage all of the assets
under our purview. You expect us to be good stewards
of the resources our members, donors and friends
provide to us.You expect us to partner effectively with
75 active class organizations, 100 chapters, 84 parent
clubs, the boards, the Naval Academy and more than
52,000 members. And, you expect us to execute our
mission in support of today's Academy, today's Brigade
of Midshipmen and our Alumni.

You can count on that commitment. I strongly
believe that our charter, our purpose and our mission
are worth fighting for… this year and every year.

Message from Admiral Larson

This email is being sent to the classes of 1984-1990 and 1995-2001

I'm sending this to you as your former Supe so that I can talk to you about the Naval Academy and Alumni affairs.

In October I had the pleasure to speak to the class of 1987 at their 20th reunion, and while preparing my remarks, I had the opportunity to reflect on my own career and what I was doing when I reached the 20 year point.

As you know, I care deeply about our alma mater. I have spent 15 years of my life in direct service to the Academy, 7 as Supe and another 8 as Chairman of the Board of the U. S. Naval Academy Foundation in direct support.

I started the Naval Academy Foundation in 1996. It has been an incredible success by any measure.  Any way you look at it there has been unprecedented support to the Naval Academy and our Alumni.

There has been a lot of email traffic that makes questionable and preposterous charges about the Alumni Association leadership that runs the gamut of power grabbing to intentionally governing in violation of the bylaws.  Two Alumni in the Class of 1964 are suing the Alumni Association trustees.  I don't know what hidden agenda these two may have or how filing a lawsuit furthers that agenda, but I do know that the Association and the Foundation are working well and fulfilling their missions. I also know Carl Trost and George Watt personally and work closely with them – their outstanding leadership is the reason we enjoy a viable and impactful Alumni Association today.

My concern is that younger classes like you, are busy with jobs, families and other activities and are often too busy to worry about Alumni affairs (I know I was at your ages) – particularly when things are going well and the Alumni Association elections were routine things.

The routine nature has changed. In the upcoming election you will all have the opportunity to vote for a Vice Chair of the Board.  Those of you in the Central and Eastern Regions will have the opportunity to vote for a Regional Trustee. If you believe as I do that things have never been better, if you want to continue our superb level of support to our Academy, then I ask one favor of you: Be informed on the issues and vote.  If you don't vote, our Alumni Association will be run by limited numbers of older classes of mostly retired alumni. I believe our association belongs to all of us. We need to participate to make this happen.

This year for the first time, the Alumni Association will have electronic voting available.  You can expect to start getting information on the slate of candidates in the near future via email and Shipmate magazine.
I would not presume to tell you how to vote, but it's important that you do vote.  Let's carry our great success forward!

Thanks.
Admiral Chuck Larson

Job Opportunities

I graduated from USMA in '89, and I know the communication within our class is quite good via members connected to our class website.  Because of that, I thought you might be able to help me spread the word about a unique career opportunity your classmates, and other JMOs they know from the Navy or Marine Corps, might be interested in if they've made the decision to leave the service.  I'm a partner in a recruiting firm that specializes in placing military veterans of all ranks into corporate careers across the country.

My company has been retained by a broadband technology company founded by a telecommunication's giant.  The company is in a high growth phase of their evolution after their IPO earlier this year.  They are seeking both former JMOs with private sector experience and transitioning JMOs to help lead their sales teams in markets throughout the country.  These sales management roles offer high visibility, great financial reward potential to include stock options, terrific career growth, and overall a ground floor opportunity to join a company being led by a winning and dynamic leadership team.  To learn more about this position, please follow this link, http://www.recruitmilitary.com/broadbandsales/.  Our client has these dynamic sales management positions available in the cities below:

OR:  Portland                                FL :  Jacksonville

NY: Rochester and Albany              WA :  Seattle and Tacoma

NC: Charlotte                               NV:   Reno

VA:   Richmond                              CA :  Sacramento , Stockton , Chico , Redding

Additionally, we have scheduled interview days on the dates below with a senior VP of this client in these cities:

Sept 6 – Rochester , NY

Sept 18 – Seattle , WA

Sept 27 – Portland , OR

Oct 5  - Sacramento , CA

2007 Navy Tailgate Season Kickoff!

Classmates, Shipmates, Friends and Family,

The date on my watch tells me we are fast approaching another season of Navy Football and it's time for us to dust off our tailgating playbook.  John Woods is having your ‘Class of 2000 Blimp' inspected and certified by the FAA for another series of offensive flights.  Todd Bruner has been scanning the party games of the world to put together some great tailgating events.  Steven Vaughn has conducted taste test after taste test to decide on just the right beer menu, and I have been searching and begging around every corner to build and stretch our tailgating dollars.  Despite our best efforts, we were unable to secure our own perimeter tailgating site this year.  Never fear, we will continue to cajole, bully and infuriate the parking lot attendants to ensure we have ample space for our parties.  With a season of successful tailgaters behind us, we find ourselves well prepared to meet all your expectations and more this year.  With the conference and blessing of our Class President, we will be adding an informal reunion this year at the Navy vs. Air Force game on Sept. 29.  If you are considering coming to town for a game and are having trouble picking the right weekend, make it the Air Force game.  Murph has already confirmed his attendance.

Now to the pressing business of how we will pay for all of this.  We have devised an annual membership program this year.  This is by no means required; however it does help remove some of the guesswork when it comes to budgeting the season.  The membership will work as follows:  single members pay $100 up front via Paypal for the entire season and non-single members pay $200 for the season.  Let's face it, you spend much more time with us than you do watching games and they cost much more.  If this sounds good, please use the wardroom mess paypal link and pay before Sept. 8.  As a show of thanks we will give annual members a customized beer mug to commemorate the season.  Bring the mug along to games to avoid being hit up for cash.  We will have extras available for purchase (check out the 24 oz. Bavarian at greyfoxpottery.com).  For those that choose to pass up the membership route, you can again pay ahead of each game.  If you are having trouble deciding how much to give, Andy Hartman has extended his enlistment as our on-site thug.  He has and will reach directly into your pockets to ensure you have thanked us properly.

Job(s) in Seattle

Hey,

I wanted to see if anyone wants to live in Seattle and work in the Marine Industry or if you know anyone who might.  My company is hiring and my boss, Art Wright, class of 1957, wants to hire Naval Academy SWO's or Sub guys.  The only catch is that the jobs involve sea time.  My company, Williamson and Associates, www.wassoc.com, does ocean engineering and deep water geophysical survey work around the world, and the managers that we want to hire need to get out on the surveys to see what we do.  The upside - world travel, small company, laid back workplace, great chance for growth (note that the boss is 73 years old), and the pay for sea time is nice.  The downside - sea time, which might be why you got out of the Nav in the first place.  Please, send this along to anyone in surrounding classes you might know, and feel free to get in touch with me, Will Roberts at wroberts@wassoc.com, or 206-285-8273, or my cell 808-781-6962.
Thanks,

Update from Justin Legg

Hey everyone,

Just to let you all know, I am fine.  I have been doing very well since receiving my bone marrow transplant in October out in Seattle.  The first 2-3 months after that were kind of rough with some fun side effects, but all are over with for the most part and I am back at work.  I am stationed in Little Creek at a desk job where they have a personal trainer handy.  I am having fun working out with him every day and just taking care of stuff on the computer for the guys who operate.  I am still active duty and the words Med Board or LIMDU never came up.  I plan on making a full recovery and I am slated to take charge of my own SEAL platoon next year around this time.  Right now I am already able to run 5 miles and am thinking about doing a half marathon in September.
To all of you who have expressed concern, or sent me cards, letters or e-mails - THANK YOU!!!  To all of you who helped run bone marrow drives on my behalf or registered at a drive - thank you even more.  Last  night in Washington D.C. I was given an award by the Armed Forces Foundation for all the people who were added to the National Marrow Donor Registry on my behalf.  So thank you all to those who participated and helped out, that award goes to you all.  Thanks again for your support 2000, you are all awesome.  Hopefully this year I will not be in the hopsital and will be able to attend a few football games since I am only 4 hour drive away.  Hope to catch up with everyone soon.

Dominick "Fatty" Floyd - Injured in Iraq

Fellas, I wish I was sending this out under better pretenses; One of our fellow brothers, Dominick "Fatty" Floyd, was injured onWednesday in Iraq.  Please keep him and Alys, and the rest of the family in your prayers.

I spoke with Alys and if they'd let him he'd be in Iraq clearing house of all those bastards.  He's stubborn enough that the doctors are going to kick him out of the hospital in no time! His platoon was sweeping out an area that had already suffered an I.E.D. attack, when another one went off directly underneath him.  He will be undergoing surgery next week at Bethesda for his leg, arm, and repair of an artery.  They cleaned out the shrapnel from his abdomen, and he is doing well.

Thank God that Fatty is doing well.  Please keep him and all our soldiers in your prayers......how lucky we are to have courageous warriors like this.

Great News from Justin Legg

Great news!!  We have a match!!!  Please see Justin's comments below:

Just wanted to let everyone know that I now have a bone marrow donor
identified who is a perfect match in all aspects that are checked for DNA
(10 out of 10) and blood, viruses, etc.  To boot we also have 2 other 10 out
of 10 donors identified as back-up donors.  So basically, I hit the bone
marrow lotto jackpot.  The primary donor is a 30 yr old female from Germany.

I will be headed to Seattle on 25 Sept.  to start my new journey.  The
first two weeks will be comprehensive testing of my everything functions.  I
will then start my total body irradiation for 3 days, twice a day on 13 Oct.

After that I have 2 days of chemo and then a rest day and I will get my
transfer tentatively on 20 Oct.  From then on it will be a minimum of 100
days observation before I can leave so I will be in Seattle until at least
the beginning of February.  The first 10-28 days will be spent in a
quarantine room until my bone marrow grows back and I have an immune system.
After that I will start with daily outpatient treatments will gradually taper off until I am going to the hospital about 1 a week and I am ready to be discharged.

This is great news and couldn't really be any better.  Suzanne and I are
both very excited and can't wait to move on to the next step in my healing.
To be honest we're not too excited about the cold, rain, and gloom, but we
hear that they have plenty of good seafood to make up for it.  We'll be
keeping in touch with everything, and just want to say thanks so much to
everyone so far that has sent us a card, cookies, or just said that they
were thinking of us.  All the thoughts have definitely made it easier for us
to cope with.  We're not out of the woods yet but at least we know where the
finish line is now.  Thanks for reading and please keep in touch.

FOOTBALL SEASON IS UPON US

Ladies and Gentlemen:

As football season approaches Todd Brunner has taken the helm and is organizing yet another amazing Tailgate season for the class of 2000.   John Woods is also taking the lead in purchasing a Class of 2000 blimp.

Todd Bruner here:

Y2K and Friends,

This week marks the beginning of yet another football season but potentially an even better flip cup and pong tournament.

Saturday:  Kickoff 530pm, gator starts at 300pm.

I am hosting this weekend's gator and will be at the same place last year:  Home side, last car(Red dodge truck) in the line of cars extending from the 50 yard line.  '00 Flag will be flying wind permitting.  There should be a blue recycle bin at the end.  Attached is a picture map if needed.

Food will be standard, burgers, dogs, fixins, snacks, and desserts.  Beer will be cold.  If you have a special type that you prefer to sock down in the flip cup or pong tourneys then you are on your own.

Donations- kindly accepted for the poor sap that runs the gator for the UMASS game(the following weekend).

Weather-  High 79, Low 65; 30% chance of rain.  We've powered through the rain in the past so don't let that hold you from coming, Evil KinAndy also promised more garbage bag carrier landings if it rains.

Parking- If you get there early, there is plenty of parking on the street by my house, corner of Poplar and N Linden.

Last but not least-  New USNA drinking policy for Mids and LTs, 0-0-1-3:  0 drinking and driving, 0 under age alcohol, 1 drink per hour, 3 drinks per event*.

* Event defined as one flip cup or pong challenge.

Please forward to anyone I missed.
See you there,

To simplify this process, a new page will be setup on our website by the start of next week with a PAYPAL account.  Instead of Todd and RIIS having to track everyone down each week, we will use our new paypal account to collect funds and the Blog on our website will be used to spread information about upcoming tailgaters and events.

If you are going to be in the Annapolis area I highly suggest you stop by.  When you have RIIS, Brunner, and Woods throwing a party, it is not to be missed.

Navy Seal Seeks Help From Bone Marrow Donors in the Fight of His Life

POC for setting up a drive is Eddie Modina at 1800 MARROW3. The mission is to "overpopulate the donor rolls". Make it happen.

At the age of 7, Justin decided he was going to be a Navy SEAL, and after graduating from Spotswood High School and the U.S. Naval Academy his dream came true."He always pushed himself to be the best," said his sister Jodi Pinedo. "To him, there are no limits. He focuses on something and just does it."

In late May, Justin realized something was wrong when he was unable to complete a five-mile run. He had pains in his ribs and they moved to his shoulders. "He knew something was drastically wrong," said his sister. On June 2, he was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia and he needs a bone marrow stem cell transplant to be cured. The first place doctors look is at a sibling for a proper blood match, but when they tested his two sisters neither was a match. "It was a crushing blow," said Pinedo.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, a bone marrow donor drive will be held at the cafeteria at Spotswood High School. The drive is sponsored by the C.W. Bill Young Department of Defense Marrow Donor Program. Additional information about this and other drives may be found at www.dodmarrow.com. Justin's family was given permission to publicize the event, with one restriction: Because Justin is an active-duty member of the Navy SEALs, and the United States is at war, his last name cannot be included in the publicity. That's OK, said his sister, adding, "Everybody in Spotswood knows my brother."

Justin is hospitalized at Bethesda (Md.) Naval Hospital, where he celebrated his 28th birthday on the Fourth of July. "He intends to beat the cancer into remission so that he may continue serving the nation as a Navy SEAL," according to a letter his sisters, Jodi and Kim, distributed to friends.

Justin, who graduated from the Naval Academy in 2000, served with the SEALs for seven months in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Most recently, he was serving as a training officer in Mississippi -- where he had to postpone his wedding from August to January while he repaired his house from the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

The odds of finding a match for Justin are daunting, about one in 20,000. If a match is not made Saturday, it could be made elsewhere, at similar events. "This is not just for the benefit of my brother. The idea is to overpopulate the donor rolls," said Jodi."I am waiting for that phone call saying I could be a donor for someone. I would be on the next plane to wherever," said Jodi, who would love someday to tell a story similar to one told to me by Alana Shultz.

In 2000, Shultz, then an art major at Rutgers, went to a donor drive at the Rutgers Student Center. She was contacted in 2003 by the National Bone Marrow Donor Program as a possible match for a woman in Israel. After additional tests were positive, Shultz's blood was drawn at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and sent to Israel, where it was credited with saving the life of 28-year-old Anat Biton.

If both give their OK, donors and recipients can learn each other's identity, one year after the recipient receives the blood. Shultz and Biton agreed, and they met in Israel. "It was a life-changing event," said Shultz. "I was the only person in the world who could have saved Anat's life." What Justin's family is praying for is one person, wherever he or she may be.

Update and correction

Just wanted to post  a quick update.  Rory Caherly and I organized a marrow drive on the sub base in King's Bay in honor of Justin and registered 170 more people in the program.  If you want to organize your own drive, just contact the people at the DOD marrow program at 1-800-Marrow-3.  Also, while the last couple of announcements and the article in Shipmate said to go to www.marrow.org in order to register, this is the National registry.  If you go to www.dodmarrow.org, this will talk about the DOD's program and your marrow will specifically be screened for DOD candidates in their registry.  You can, of course, register in both programs.

Update on Justin Legg

Shipmates,

Here is an update on Justin Legg which will be in SEPT's edition of shipmate.

Around the first of June, Justin was diagnosed with acute lymphocyte leukemia. He needs a bone marrow transplant. He remains upbeat and positive but he is in dire need of a donor at this time. When told his chances of survival, Justin replied “That's okay, there was only a 10% chance I was going to be a SEAL.” Please go to www.marrow.org for details on bone marrow donation and entering the registry as a possible match. If you are a member of the registry already please update your contact information. You may be in fact already in the registry because donors were solicited during blood drives at the Academy when we were Mids!!! Please keep your thoughts and prepares with Justin and his family as he fights this disease.

Justin you are in the Class of 2000's thoughts and prayers. God Speed!

A Helping Hand

Greetings Classmates,

I just wanted to take an opportunity to ask all of you a favor.  For the three months or so, I have been training to run in the Chicago Marathon in October.  That's right, the beer guzzling, chain smoking Doug is no more.  Earlier this year I quit smoking, then decided a good goal and a way to celebrate my quitting would be to run the marathon.  After signing up, I learned of the Charity Runner program for the American Cancer Society.  Having had numerous family members and recently some friends and some of our classmates diagnosed with cancer, I decided this would be a good opportunity for me to try do something to make a difference.  I signed up to be a charity runner for the American Cancer Society.  If any of you would like to sponsor me to be a charity runner, you can click on the link below and go to my charity runner website.  There is a button there you can follow and make a donation, for those of you that know me and were concerned about me handling money.  My initial goal was $750, which I have already exceeded, but why stop there?  Again, all of the contributions go to the American Cancer Society and are tax decuctible, so if you would like to donate please follow the link below.  Thanks in advance for your consideration and I hope you all are doing well.

Gratefully,
Doug Nye

Justin Legg has been diagnosed with cancer, let's get motvated and help him out.

Attached is an article from the hometown newspaper with more detail.

He needs a donor ASAP.  The chances of finding an unregistered match are 1 in 25,000.  We have 1,000 strong in our class and most of our extended families contain 25 or more people. Let's make it happen. Check www.dodmarrow.org for more details.

Murph's Engaged!

Just so everyone knows.  Yesterday Murph left for another deployment, but just a few days before he proposed to his girlfriend (and sister of our classmate) Lauren Banasz.  Congratulations to Murph and Lauren!

Anyone up for a game of Rock Paper Scissors?

In my eternal quest to beat Lauber I took part in creating RPS Super Challenge.com the world's first online rock paper scissors tournament. I figured it was better to create the site than to fly back and forth from Japan to challenge him. Take a look, let me know what you think and if you want to get a game in click here. Laubs, I'll be waiting.
